To line or not to line?

I feel the same way about lip liners as I do about highlighters, brow pencils/powders and bronzers; they’re great for certain occasions but they aren’t an integral part of my every day makeup routine in the same way that foundation, mascara and blush are

Unfortunately I suffer from bad skin and as we all know water is the cure for pretty much everything so I get through 2-3 litres of hot water/herbal tea each day. Which means, of course, that I’m always drinking something so can never keep my lip colour in place for more than about an hour

To be honest this doesn’t really bother me much but what I really couldn’t stand is that horrid lip-liner-still-in-place-with-no-lip-product-on-the-actual-lips-look that a lot of girls end up with after a long day, so I generally veer away from liners unless I know I’ll be getting the chance to touch up my makeup

My favourite lip liner is...

...L’Oreal Invincible Lip Liner in shade 722

This is fairly soft so goes on the lips really easily without me actually having to drag the skin. It’s also extremely comfortable; I like to fill in my whole lip with the liner and then apply a lipstick over the top and some pencils have been incredibly drying whereas I’ve been able to wear this for ages with no problems at all

The colour is ever so slightly darker than my lips so when this is applied it makes me look “finished” in a way that a plain gloss or lipstick doesn’t quite manage :)

My only complaint (oh come on you know me well enough by now to know there’s always something I don’t like about a product :p) is that due to this being one of the more modern “twist up” pencil style applicators it can’t be sharpened. Not a deal-breaker or anything but just a tad annoying when you’re trying to get a very precise line, you know? ♥

I have to agree about the lip liner staying on your lips but no sign of lipstick. I tend to chicken out and wear very neutral lipsticks so my lip liner is very subtle to the point that if my lipstick wore off you wouldnt really notice. However I did apply the lipliner all over my lip and then the lipstick over the top to try and help it last a little longer...fat chance of that ha ha!
Im using Boots No7 Nude and its a twisty one too. I cant get the nice neat shape of my top lip unlike pencil liners.

I will check this one out, are there many other shades? x

I am with you: even though I have eyebrow pencils and lip liners - those 2 things are things I do/use maybe one a fortnight, maybe even less..

But actually my lip liners are all nude or soft pink and whenever I do wear lip liner, my lipstick does look better when first applied.
So why I don't wear them more, I do not know?

Ah I really dislike those kind of "twist up" packaging! I have this "twist up" eyeliner and I dislike the fact I can't sharpen it so much that I have used it only once and never since. Despite the fact that I like the colour...

I'm not really a lipstick/lipliner person, for the same reasons as you. I'm always drinking (water ^^) and I hate it when I see my lipcolour wear off more and more with each sip of water I have.

I drink 2-3 litres of water a day due to the rubbish air con at work - it's really dehydrating, and I can feel the wrinkles just popping out while I sit at my desk.

I use lip liners when I want a precise look, or if I'm wearing a lipstick colour a bit darker than usual, because I have a slightly uneven top lip, and my bottom lip isn't really well defined. I just get the NYX ones - they're super cheap and come in a decent range of colours. To get around the "lined lips but no colour" issue, I line my lips and then colour them in a bit with the liner first. It alters the lipstick colour a bit, but it means that when it wears off it does so fairly evenly.

I feel the same! I dont own any lipliners...If i want some defined lips I dip a angled brush or a lip brush on a lipstick...

Hi Joy! When doing other people's makeup I seem to always use a lip liner, to get that 'finished' look as you said. But, when it comes to my routine, I can't remember the last time I used it...

I use lip liner all over my lip, then pop the color over it all the time! Idk, just makes it last longer to me! & you are sooo right about those retractable ones! (i use a tissue and spin it around so try and form a point on it)

great post by the way! xx

Same thoughts here! I for one hate lip liner because it looks very unnatural! I NEVER wear it!

Just wanted to reply to you, thought it might be easier here with less comments (:!
I use to stay in Lisburn every year when i was younger, all my dads family still live there. I loved driving through from Belfast! Haven't been in a few years though x

When I do use lip liner, i usually fill out my entire lip as well, at least then some of the colour remains on my lips after the lipstick wears off.

Sherrie I think there were only about 4 or 5 shades available… Isnt it weird how there are so few shades of lip liners available yet you can get like 200 different eye pencil colours?

Cheeky Beauty I dunno about you but I find that I want each step in my makeup routine to have a fairly noticeable end result. I hate spending a minute or two applying lip liner only for it to make very little difference to my end look!

Bibi I have the same problem with eyeliners too! AVON do these awesome glimmersticks and the colour is totally gorgeous but the twisty applicator gets on my nerves. Whoever invents a little sharpener device for these things is gonna be worth an absolute fortune :)

Dee my place is the same – it’s one of the reasons I have to resort to such rich night creams… stupid air-con, I dunno whats worse; that or the heating during the winter! I was ogling NYX liners on ebay the other day so I think they deserve a place on my shopping list

Nikkay you probably wouldn’t even recognise the place because it’s changed so much over the last couple of years. Honestly Belfast city centre is like a completely different place. Rather oddly I was in Lisburn at the weekend with my dad… I cant remember the last time I went and didn’t pick up some clothes or makeup! ♥

Marisa I think you’re probably better avoiding them if you can get away with it. As far as I’m concerned the fewer steps you need to apply your makeup the better!!
